2021 Volkswagen Tarek
With the last Volkswagen Beetle rolling off the assembly line in Puebla, Mexico, previously today, the German automaker prepares to take a moment of silence while it retools the plant for its newest offering: the Tarek crossover.
Volkswagen de Mexico CEO Steffen Reiche validated that Beetle’s area on the assembly line will be replaced by the Tarek, a little compact crossover which is anticipated to slot into Volkswagen’s lineup just beneath of another CUV put together at the plant; the Tiguan. Staff members at Volkswagen’s Puebla facility also put together the current-generation Jetta and Golf.

Production of the Tarek is stated to start in 2020, with sales beginning near the end of 2021 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil.

The Tarek is supposedly currently offered in China under the name Tharu and is based on the same modular MQB platform which makes up the underpinnings of the bigger Atlas and Tiguan models. The international model features a 1.2-liter and optional 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine mated to one of the car manufacturer’s wonderful seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmissions, though the choices which will be made available on the North American models have not yet been revealed.
It appears that the Tarek might be the mysterious “Volks-SUV,” a vehicle which has been teased for both the Chinese and North American markets over the past year in place of the compact T-Roc.
However never fear– in the crossover-crazed United States, VW has eyes set on working even more CUV options into its lineup. One specific example is the Atlas Cross Sport, a two-row, five-seater variation of Volkswagen’s top-tier Atlas; a vehicle which will join its huge brother on the very same assembly line north of the border and assembled at the car manufacturer’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee later this year.
2021 Volkswagen Tarek Engine
As with most vehicles in the Chinese market, the base Tharu is somewhat underpowered. The tiniest engine the Tharu gets is a 1.2-L gas motor producing 116 hp. It also has an optional 1.4-L turbo 4-cylinder with 150 hp or a 2.0-L turbo with 186 hp. All of those come paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission geared for front-wheel-drive only.
The 2.0-L Turbo sounds effective enough for the North American market, although it remains to be seen if we’ll get an FWD or AWD transmission.
